Ian West

Prosecutes or defends in all types of criminal cases, with specialist expertise in complex fraud matters.

Ian West initially qualified as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand in 1990. He moved to the UK in 1996, when he joined Bank House Chambers.

He now practises in criminal and regulatory & public law.

Ian West has extensive experience in criminal cases relating to firearms offences, licensing applications and radio communication cases. Having been appointed to the VHCC advocate panel, he undertakes cases of exceptional complexity and seriousness.

Following his appointment to the CPS advocate panel as a grade 2 prosecutor, he regularly prosecutes on matters relating to theft, deception, assault occasioning ABH and section 20 GBH, burglary, possession of drugs and non-fatal road traffic offences.

He has recently been lead junior to other members of chambers on behalf of the prosecution.

General level of sentencing for large scale commercial production of cannabis

R v Thompson & Others [2013]
Successful prosecution of multi-handed case involving conspiracy to supply Class A drugs in South Yorkshire where the defendants were sentenced to a total of 54 years in custody.

R v Alquebai, Barnes & Jordan [2012]
Successful prosecution of defendants involved in a multi-handed case where a gang of eight subjected two strangers to a horrifying knife attack in the middle of Sheffield city centre. Three defendants were convicted and sentenced to a total of 45 years’ imprisonment.
